Over 25,000 Dubai residents take on the challenge at the Opening Weekend Carnival
It was a spectacular start to the Dubai Fitness Challenge at Safa Park as thousands gathered at the Opening Weekend Carnival, brought to you by DP World, on 20 and 21 October 2017. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council for Dubai Government, inaugurated the event, which saw a host of celebrity appearances, sports fun, activities for all ages and live entertainment
Rio in Dubai
Former England football captain, Rio Ferdinand, lead the celebrity brigade by encouraging everyone to embrace a healthier lifestyle at the Dubai Fitness Challenge’s main stage. He showcased his own training routine and joined in with the energetic Football Freestylers show.
“Fitness for me is a lifestyle. I’ve always been active, but when I retired, I wanted to stay fit and stay healthy for mind, body and soul. I hope to remain fit for the rest of my life,” said Rio Ferdinand, advising people to change their perception of fitness.
“Make sure it [fitness] doesn’t feel like work, it’s got to feel like fun. That’s one of the reasons why I took up the challenge because it’s different to football. The Dubai Fitness Challenge has been amazing. It’s a unique setting, great activities and people seem to be enjoying it,” added Ferdinand.
The message of adopting a more active lifestyle was echoed by other fitness personalities who took to the main stage at Safa Park, including The Biggest Loser’s Rob ‘The Killer’ Edmond and local RJs Kris Fade, Big Rossi and James Everton.
Participants in the inaugural carnival made it a huge success, bringing the energy and staying motivated with a full programme of live performances, dance workouts and special activities. Just a few of the weekend’s highlights included a stunning skydiving stunt from XDubai, slackline aerobics from Dubai’s spectacular live show La Perle, and rhythmic routines by the Sharmila Dance troupe.
The upbeat pace continued with cardio-fuelled sessions by NRG Boxing, The Bollywood Workout as well as local favourites, Gold’s Gym, that got everyone improving their core strength while grooving to infectious Latin beats.
Fun for all ages
There was plenty to stay entertained all through the day, whether participants were five or fifty years old. Friends challenged each other at the Come and Try Fitness Zone, while the Children’s Fun and Fitness Zone saw active kids take on bubble soccer, an inflatable assault course and Les Mills Born to Move classes.
Budding footballers also felt right at home at the ‘ball control’ parkour challenge and competition ran high at the penalty shootout competitions and best goal celebrations.
Another weekend highlight was the free Global Mala – or ‘mala around the earth’ – hosted by YogaFest Dubai where five qualified instructors lead a two-hour yogathon that saw an inspiring 108 sun salutations take place.
Plenty! With four more family weekend carnivals, over 1,500 free workout classes, 75 mobile gyms and AED1 million in prizes to be won – there’s something for everyone during the Dubai Fitness Challenge.
